Ways to be Happy without Money: Blog Post

As we have been talking this week, money is almost a requirement it seems, to have a happy life. It makes sense, the more money you have the more luxuries and opportunities you can experience. However, there are plenty of people who don’t have the means for this but are still happy (sometimes more so than those with lots of funds!). In this blog post, we want to address other things, besides money, that can lead to a happy life.

It’s fairly easy to moan and complain about a lack of money but sometimes money is what money is. We either have it or we don’t. We may have a lot, none or some. Many people in the world are addicted to affluence; it is hard to get out of that trap. We are surrounded by materialism, the advertising on television, our friends parading the newest clothes, new car, house, and it makes us feel the need to live up.

Even those that on the surface appear to have it all cannot stop consuming; they’re addicted. Addicted to what they feel money can buy them – happiness! Or so they are led to believe.

What Can Money Not Buy? Love – family – friendship – nature – relationships – imagination – creativity. These things are huge parts of our lives and happiness.
When you are having financial worries, try to focus on your relationships, your family and nature to help ease your mind. Another way to increase your happiness level is by helping others. Volunteers are needed year round, rain or shine. A random act of kindness will not only help others be happy, but also make you happier in return.

Try to set time aside each week, for example two hours per week, and dedicate it to helping others. The power helping people has on the psyche is highlighted in a study on the collapse of East Germany and its infrastructure of volunteering. Due to the reunification of Germany, a large portion of the volunteering infrastructure collapsed as people randomly lost their opportunities for volunteering. These volunteers were then compared to the control group who had no change in their volunteer status. The findings revealed volunteering is rewarding and is linked to higher life satisfaction.

Try these two techniques the next time you have the blues about money. It could be as simple as going into an Aged Care facility and listening to someone’s stories – you’ll instantly feel happier (and so will they!).
